The Sessions Is Back This Month: Our Members-Only Open Mic

The Sessions runs again this month, and if you’ve been meaning to come to one. This is a good one to pick. Numbers have been running toward the upper end lately, closer to 30 than 20, which makes for a full room and a genuinely good night.

Here’s what to expect, whether you’re playing or just coming to watch.

The Format

Songs, jams, and sit-ins. Somebody plays a song they’ve been working on, somebody else joins in on a second part or a harmony, and between those a few people jam through something loose. There’s no strict running order and no judging panel.

Doors open a little before the music starts, which is the part regulars actually show up for. Half the value of the night happens in the room before anyone plays: gear questions, what everyone’s stuck on, someone showing someone else a voicing.

If This Is Your First One

Come and watch. Genuinely, that’s the most common way people start, and nobody gets put on a list without asking.

If you do want to play, one song you know cold beats three you half know. Nerves compress your technique, so whatever you can play at 80% of your best on a bad day is the right choice. Bring your own guitar if you have one you’re comfortable with; PA and backline are handled.

The thing first-timers always say afterward

Not “that was terrifying.” Almost always some version of “everyone was way more supportive than I expected.” The room is 25 people who have all been exactly where you’re standing.

What Regulars Get Out of It

Advanced students use The Sessions as a testing ground. New arrangement, a song they’ve never played outside their own room, a set list they’re building toward a real gig. Audience feedback in a friendly room is more useful than a mirror and much less costly than finding out on stage somewhere else.

Beginners get something different and arguably more valuable: a recalibration. Learning alone leaves you with no reference point except the internet, which is full of professionals. Seeing where real players at every level actually are usually reveals that you’re much closer to your goals than you thought.

Sitting In

If playing a full song solo feels like too much, sitting in on someone else’s is the better entry point. A second guitar part, a harmony vocal, a simple solo over a section. You’re contributing without carrying the whole thing, and you learn to listen while playing, which is the skill that separates people who can play from people who can play with others.

The Sessions is members-only, current students and recently graduated ones, and it’s free with every subscription at every tier. Location alternates between the East Riverside studio and an Austin partner venue, and the date and address go out to current students in advance.
