Online Guitar Lessons: Learn Over Video From Anywhere

Live Instruction, Wherever You Are

Online lessons here are live one-on-one sessions, not a library of pre-recorded videos. Same sequenced curriculum as in-person lessons, same applied theory approach, same instructor. Students in Austin who’d rather not drive across town use it, and so do students who don’t live in Texas at all.

The clearest difference from self-paced platforms is that someone is watching your hands while you play. Nearly every self-taught plateau traces back to a small technique fault nobody flagged, and that gets caught on camera as easily as in the room.

What You Need

Less than you’d expect. A laptop, tablet, or phone with a camera, something to prop it up, and a reasonable connection.

The one thing worth getting right is the camera angle. A single view that shows both hands, roughly from the side with the guitar across the frame, beats a beautifully lit shot of your face. A phone mount and a stack of books solves it in about a minute, and we’ll sort it on the consult call.

You don’t need an audio interface or a microphone. Laptop audio is fine for lessons; the sound quality that matters for teaching is well below recording quality.

How a Session Runs

Internet lag makes playing in perfect unison impractical, so lessons are built around alternating rather than playing together. You play a passage, I listen and watch, then I demonstrate slowly with the camera on my hands. Screen-shared tabs, chord charts, and fretboard diagrams come up as needed.

After the session you get a video recap plus the same detailed written recap in-person students receive. Being able to rewatch the exact demonstration mid-practice is one thing remote lessons genuinely do better.

Who It Suits, and Who It Doesn’t

Online works well for adults, teens, theory work, songwriting, and anyone with a schedule that moves. Theory in particular translates cleanly, since shared diagrams beat a notepad.

In-person suits younger kids, hands-on gear setup with your own rig, and students who want jam time with drum tracks and real amps in the room. Some students split the difference, mostly in person, online when travel or weather interferes.

Still Part of the Community

Remote students aren’t cut off from the rest of it. The Sessions, Songwriting Circles, and Jam Sessions are included with every subscription, and remote students who visit Austin are welcome to come play. More than a few have planned a trip around one.
